Northern School for Autism (Senior Campus)
For many of us, washing the dishes is a chore. For Malavika it’s an accomplishment.
As a student at Northern School for Autism, Malavika has been working towards goals around independence and life skills. At breakfast club and with encouragement from staff, she’s learnt how to wash dishes on her own. Today, she proudly takes responsibility for washing the dishes in her classroom.
At Northern School for Autism, every student is working towards their own goals. And for many, breakfast club is where some of the most meaningful learning happens. It’s become one of the most-loved parts of the school day, with students and staff alike looking forward to it each morning.
For some students, breakfast club provides something else too: certainty.
Many students travel long distances to school, with some spending more than an hour on a bus each morning. Getting breakfast at home isn’t always possible. By the time the students arrive at school, they’re hungry and ready for a positive start to the day.
That’s where breakfast club steps in.
The program ensures students can access a nutritious breakfast in a welcoming, supportive environment, helping them settle into the day ready to learn.
It’s an opportunity to learn how to communicate their needs, whether that’s asking for some milk, for help with the toaster, or making choices about what to eat. For others, it’s a chance to build social connections, sit alongside peers and take part in shared routines that help them feel part of a community.
